Alzheimer’s is a chronic, neurodegenerative disease that results in plaques and tangles in the brain. The most common symptoms are memory loss, changes in mood and loss of motivation. Alzheimer’s is a result of multiple factors, including, but not limited to: age, genetics, environmental, lifestyle and co-existing medical conditions.
A study recently published in the Journal of Cell Physiology highlighted the effects of green tea catechins in the prevention of age-related cognitive decline. The catechins in the green tea act an antioxidant, modulate the neuroinflammatory pathway and regulate cell-death. Studies have also shown that the catechins can bind to the beta-amyloid proteins to prevent plaque formations.
Over 70% of those affected by Alzheimer’s are thought to have a genetic component. If Alzheimer’s runs in your family, consider consulting with a Naturopathic Doctor to discuss prevention!
